When I choose 6/8 time, I generally like to 'feel' two groups of three triplets per bar. It should mostly feel more like 2 beats per bar (composed of triplets) than three. When I play this lullabye, I definitely feel the three distinct beats, so 3/4 is more appropriate, in my opinion. It's an excellent question, and others may have different theories.
